The Bristish Council translates very simply as "specialisation certificate"- for the moment I've decided to leave in Italian with an explanation in brackets.

Yvonne/Jim - thanks - the certifcate was issued by the University of Bologna - it's a third level studies diploma/certificate but finding it hard to translate as it's not a standard post-graduate diploma (was also thinking of post-graduate certificate as according to Yvonne's comments there is no thesis involved - but not at all sure)...

A diploma is usually di "maturità di una scuola superiore" which is generally a high school graduation certificate for an eighteen year old. However there are further educaction institutes which go by the name of "scuola" and give "diplome"

I was thinking along the lines of Specialisation Diploma/certificate but am worried that this is too generic a translation...

As far as I know, the difference between a specialist and a Master is that a specialist doesn't have to work on a thesis to graduate
