Kojiro, Japan's first FTP program (which was something of a hit) Explanation: “プチヒット” is made up of “プチ” (from the French “petit”, which in Japanese is used with a meaning along the lines of “modest”, “a bit of a”, “something of a” or “rather a”) and “ヒット” (from the English “hit”). It refers to something being a modest success, a bit of a hit. The fact that “プチヒット” is not a part of the program’s name is clear from the same programmer’s blog, at https://kamiyan.hatenablog.jp/entry/20110626, where he adds some grammar to flesh out the phrase that you give in the title here, writing, “...日本初のFTPソフト小次郎を作ってシェアウェアとして販売して、プチヒットして資本を用意して...” If what you are translating is Slide #3 of the same file that is found on Slideshare, then the writer is listing some elements that would not be considered parallel in English, i.e., “In college: 3D Yaro, DirectCD, C++, Kojiro (the first FTP program in Japan and a modest hit), machine learning, genetic programming.” Obviously he didn’t create C++, and apparently he did create Kojiro, but his degree of original involvement in the remaining items is not clear. So I think the best option would be to put “日本初FTPソフト” and “プチヒット” within parentheses, as I have done here. But if you are translating the phrase and it is not found in a list like this, then you could write it as I have done in the “Target term” field above. |
