Discussion

Mikhail Kropotov (asker) Mar 2, 2007:
Irene, Andrey and Gary - the point is that the driver is up above the road, and he/she likes that feeling. High clearance contributes to that, but it's basically just a tall SUV.

Levan Namoradze Mar 2, 2007:

high ride

Family likes a high ride but not the high fuel bills
Darshak's family finds high seating positions alleviate carsickness but want to avoid the pain of the fuel bills that usually come with a vehicle that rides high.

This may or may not refer to ground clearance. Essentially it's about how high the driver is above the ground.

it lowers the ride height to 7.3 inches. We didn't hit the 118-mph mark, but found the Touareg quite stable at high speeds. When heading off the pavement or wading through deep snow, the driver can manually raise the high ride height to 9.6 inches by turning a knob. To ford extreme obstacles, the driver can select an ultra-high mode, raising the ground clearance to an impressive 11.8 inches.

"high ride" is widely used, with "high seating position(s)" as an alternative.

"It's very comfortable to drive because of the high ride" - a possible way of putting it.

commanding view

This is a gorgeous, short hike to a lake at the foot of massive James Peak...but getting to the trailhead takes a while (and requires high clearance, preferably 4-wheel-drive).

In Russian посадка is used both for car seats and car clearance. Misha known the context best.
Note from asker:

neutral GaryG : Isn't that зазор? And that would only make driving more comfortable if kept the car from "bottoming out" on bumpy unpaved roads

Depends on the context, I guess. But for the car itself посадка means clearance

neutral Dorene Cornwell : I agree with GaryG. Of one is driving ove rough roads, a high clearance will help the ride, but I think this is more general, relating to the driver's view.

high seat

Per Callaham's посадка means "seat" when referring to a vehicle

Joe Wiesenfelder says: Overall full-size Best Bet: The Five Hundred is arguably the most underrated and underappreciated car on the market. A packaging triumph, its cabin is remarkably roomy, with nice, high seats and ample backseat legroom. The trunk can accommodate eight or nine golf bags in a car that's 1 foot shorter, bumper to bumper, than the Crown Victoria (from http://research.cars.com/go/crp/buyingGuides/Story.jsp?year=...

Callaham's also has "boarding (vehicle)", which is not entirely clear to me but suggests a high step is required to take your seat. This is usually a negative for short people and for women who wear skirts.
