i.e. in a position in which the axes of the rolls are horizontal, but I don't think the word "axis/axes" is necessary in English.

Thank you. I hadn't heard that one, though "pie in the sky" is what politicians' promises are sometimes called (or "pie in the sky when you die" for preachers' promises of rewards in the afterlife)
