Если мы будем каждый день обращать к Богу молитву о прощении наших грехов, если не машинально, не механически, не по заученному тексту, а от сердца будем пред Богом перечислять свои грехи — и большие, размером в жизнь или в полжизни, или те, что мы совершили накануне, — если мы, повергая Господу на Его суд то, что происходит в глубине нашей души, будем испрашивать у Него прощения каждый день, то это будет означать, что мы живем религиозной жизнью.
Вы выбрали ошибочный ответ, ИМХО, Повергать - это не означает bring before God или bring before the judgment of God Повергать в прямом смысле - present to God, reveal what is inside your soul, expose to, but bring before God would be understood as for ex; bring sacrifice before God etc. Вообще в этом контексте имеется в виду "confessing and (repenting)", но в другом виде и форме объясняется в контексте. In short, the meaning of this text is: If whoever, who thinks that he or she is a believer and every day turns to God and asks Him to forgive sins, it means that the person lives not in spiritual life, real life with God, but it means that the person lives in traditional religious life. (just going to Church doing as everyday activity such as washing his face in the morning).
Yes, you are right regarding the general meaning, but "confess" would be direct translation which means tell God about your sins, повергая Господу-means if we interprete in general and directly- "presenting what is inside your soul to God", but here something a bit different with the same meaning, more broad and not direct, kind of expose to or something else. You will reveal everything before God which is hidden, if we use direct translation, we might lose the broader meaning in the context. That's why повергая is used here not "признаться или исповедовать"
For one thing, it doesn't say повергнуть к НОГАМ Господа, but even if it did, you still cannot povergnut GREKHI k nogam Gospoda. Можно повергнуть кого-то к чьим-то ногам (Некрасов: "повергнуть к ногам своим несчастного, спасти от погибели и возвратить миру для любви и счастия" (oh, jeez, such awful mush!!!)). Можно повергнуть свое серце к чьим-то ногам ("Предприял я к ней итти и повергнуть к ногам ее сердце, которым она самовластно овладала.") Но повергнуть грехи свои к чьим-то ногам, пусть и Господним, это, знаете ли, не совсем по-русски. Do a strict google search for "повергнуть к ногам" and see what pops up.
Where you are right, of course, is that they keep on mixing the high speak and the vernacular, and that surely doesn't give much additional credence to the message.
Нет ничего противоречивого в высказывании, смысл которого в том, чтобы "повергнуть к ногам Господа на суд его грехи, затаившиеся в душе нашей", поскольку именно о грехах идет речь выше. We could call it "sloppy Russian" not because the term is wrong but rather because it's a stylistic cocktail made of popular language with added "churchly" pitch. And yes, the resulting mix is no Inferno but there is no error in word usage, IMO.
or a case of bad, unsophisticated Russian because povergat' Gospodu the secrets of your soul makes no sense at all. Повергать можно в геенну огненную:) Здесь скорее всего имелось в виду "поверЯЯ Господу" i.e trusting the Almighty with or telling him in confidence about all those little sins of ours he is deemed to be so fond of forgiving:)
