Что такое магазин западного образца? Отсутствие очередей. Удобство обслуживанияю Длинные позиции, которые не кончаются, когда ты приходишь в магазин и можешь иметь огромный выбор, широкий спектр.

I'd venture to say "popular items"
The text you quote sounds a bit awkward in Russian - like a back translation etc.
Definitely this phrase does not mean "long position" as in securities.
Soviet people visiting Western countries were amazed by a) choice and b) lack of shortages in Western supermarkets, so I'm basing on that.
However, my guess is just that - a guess. More context would help - as usual!

I am not sure about correct English translation, but it's what it means - items which a retailer stocks up in large quantities.
- Книги всевозможные - в том числе и абсолютно новые - например, из "зависших" тиражей. Это так называемые ***"длинные" позиции*** - когда количество данного наименования книги исчисляется тысячами экз. Есть и ***"короткие" позиции***, из возвратов: к примеру, у одного из поставщиков есть абсолютно новые книги, но с ярлыками, ценниками московского магазина. В Екатеринбурге эти книги взять отказались. А мы возьмем!

Порядок расположения товарных единиц должен учитывать срок поступления товара в продажу и срок годности. Все ***длинные позиции*** и товары с коротким сроком хранения должны быть ближе к покупателю, что стимулирует их покупку.
