Spanish term

Porcelánico "Técnico"

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering Porcelain stoneware tiles
Me again.

I just do not think that in English, we would say "technical" porcelain tiles. I have been saying "porcelain stoneware tiles". Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thanks.

Unglazed/full-bodied porcelain tiles

Unglazed porcelain tiles are full-bodied—the entire tile is composed of natural clay. Commercial areas, like business offices and stores, are better with tough and dense unglazed tiles while projects within the home that focus more on color and theme will benefit from glazed porcelain.

Porcelain tile: Is actually part of the ceramic family, but distinct in its characteristics due to the types and mix of clays used, and the specific methods of production. Porcelain is a much stronger version of ceramic. Both types are made of clay and are fired in a kiln. The main differences are that porcelain tiles have a water absorption rate of less than 0.5%, a result which classifies them as fully vitrified, making them incredibly hard and rendering them suitable for heavy traffic floor use, including industrial situations. Porcelain tiles can be used in virtually any situation - from light traffic bathroom floors (and walls) to factory floors and swimming pools, both in (as mosaics) and around them.

Unglazed Porcelain:

Full-bodied porcelain is a type of vitrified tile where the colour runs right through the body with a single colour from the surface to the base of the tile. Not only is the colour consistent throughout, but the technical properties, such as water absorption, frost & acid resistance are also consistent.

Mary, I'm glad you found it helpful. Thank you for the points. I also wish you all the best for the new year.

agree philgoddard : Yes, I think that's it. If they're full bodied, they don't need a glaze.

Phil, thanks for confirming this :-)
agree neilmac : I'm convinced. And it's handy to know for future reference.

An item on a long list of things that didn't exist when I came to Spain, meaning that I've learnt what lots of things are called in Spanish before I've learnt in English!! Cheers, Neil :-)

Definition

I think you're right to be suspicious of "technical porcelain", widespread though it is.
