Spanish term

sobre (in this context - investment)

Spanish to English Bus/Financial Investment / Securities sobre (in this context)
This is a letter from a hedge fund manager. HO = heating oil

"...comprar la cantidad sobre HOX15 y la misma cantidad sobre HOH16 a 185 si llega."

and

"Las mismas estructuras se harian sobre Agosto, Septiembre y Octubre."

Discussion

Jeff Whittaker (asker) Jun 14, 2016:
What about just "for"
"for August", "additional position for March", "for HOX15", "for the months of", "for 20,000 m3", "strategy for February"...
Jeff Whittaker (asker) Jun 14, 2016:
"una posición adicional sobre marzo "
"queda comprado sobre febrero y/o marzo"
"una alternativa de operación garantizada sobre octubre "
"precios muy altos sobre los meses de setiembre y octubre"
"contratos cerrados sobre Julio"
"estrategia sobre febrero"
philgoddard Jun 14, 2016:
I think your suggestion may be on the right lines, Peter, but I agree that we don't have enough context. It's not clear what "la cantidad" refers to, or "a 185 si llega", or "las mismas estructuras."
Francois Boye Jun 14, 2016:
'sobre' can also mean 'acerca de' in Spanish. This is the meaning that is relevant to this context: 'buy the quantity regarding/of the heating oil commodity on November 15th'

Peter Riccomini Jun 14, 2016:
I think these are two slightly different uses of 'sobre'. The example below (sobre 20.000 m3) obviously refers to the size of the hedge. With regard to the original example (sobre Agosto, Septiembre y Octubre), there is insufficient context to know exactly what the manager is proposing, but it initially refers to using the November (HOX15) and March (HOH16) futures and then to doing the same with the Aug, Sep and Oct futures.
philgoddard Jun 14, 2016:
This is about futures. I think "sobre" may simply mean "of", with HOX15 being a contract date of November 2015 - "sobre" being the underlying quantity of oil. But I'm not totally sure.
Jeff Whittaker (asker) Jun 14, 2016:
" realizando un hedge sobre 20.000 m3"

ok so "on the basis of"
Note from asker:
'On the basis of' works with "realizando un hedge sobre 20.000 m3" while 'through' does not
