fulling mill Explanation: I think it might be this. Fulling, also known as tucking or walking (spelt waulking in Scotland), is a step in woollen clothmaking which involves the cleansing of cloth (particularly wool) to eliminate oils, dirt, and other impurities, and making it thicker. The worker who does the job is a fuller, tucker, or walker,[1] all of which have become common surnames. The Welsh word for a fulling mill is pandy, which appears in many place-names, for example Tonypandy ("fulling mill lea"). Fulling involves two processes, scouring and milling (thickening). Originally, fulling was carried out by pounding the woollen cloth with the fuller's feet, or hands, or a club. In Scottish Gaelic tradition, this process was accompanied by waulking songs, which women sang to set the pace. From the medieval period, however, fulling was often carried out in a water mill, followed by stretching the cloth on great frames known as tenters, to which it is attached by tenterhooks. It is from this process that the phrase being on tenterhooks is derived, as meaning to be held in suspense. The area where the tenters were erected was known as a tenterground. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fulling Un batán es una máquina destinada a transformar unos tejidos abiertos en otros más tupidos. After weaving, both worsteds and woolens undergo a series of finishing procedures including: fulling (immersing the fabric in water to make the fibers interlock); crabbing (permanently setting the interlock); decating (shrink-proofing); and, occasionally, dyeing. Although wool fibers can be dyed before the carding process, dyeing can also be done after the wool has been woven into fabric. http://www.madehow.com/Volume-1/Wool.html Machine à foulon; batan, toda especie de máquina que sirve para batanar los tejidos de lana. https://books.google.es/books?id=uW-tkRh6j1kC&pg=PA521&lpg=P... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 55 mins (2018-02-25 23:49:48 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Un foulon (du latin: fullo), également autrefois appelé moulin fouleur, moulin foulon, ou encore aujourd'hui, moulin à foulon, est un mécanisme (mû le plus souvent par un moteur hydraulique) servant à battre ou fouler la laine tissée (drap) dans de l'argile smectique pour l'assouplir et la dégraisser. Le moulin était exploité par un ouvrier foulon ou foulonnier. Il pouvait aussi servir pour les cuirs et peaux. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foulon_(moulin) I know the reference above is in French but it confirms that 'fulling (mill)' is the right term. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 57 mins (2018-02-25 23:51:47 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Terre à foulon is fuller's earth. |
