With the 20th-century avant-garde this demand found a new life-blood by liberating itself from the chains of realism, to the point of producing pictorial experiments like those of the futurists, in which the light and movement of bodies are entrusted to the dynamic synthesis of lines and colors. But the great season of abstract art, which in the 20th century seemed to appear almost out of thin air, was in fact the fruit of an even older deliberation, one whose “roots” could be found in less recent episodes. Without going too far back in time, one in particular comes to mind, with which Tellas’ Clima estremo seems to involuntarily dialogue almost two centuries later: Snow Storm – Steam-Boat off a Harbour’s Mouth, which Joseph Mallord William Turner painted in 1842. Placed at the center of the painting, though barely recognizable, is a steamboat, surrounded by a snowstorm and seemingly suffocated the by the extreme violence of the sea and the inclement weather. The precocious genius of Turner lies in his ability to give the canvas the same atmospheric fury while sparing any realistic ambitions, and alternatively investing in that which, some decades later, Monet would call impression: the graphic and pictorial element was no longer a vessel for information, but rather for sensations. And so, the naturalistic painting of Tellas nestles into the groove left by the pioneers of abstract art, and in the emotional tension that is created between one determinable figure and its own rarefaction, liquefaction, pulverization.
