two pow wows?! Jul 5, 2004

Looks like two camps might be forming - one who wants to get drunk and one who wants to swap tips on translation!!!

I'm in the first camp myself, after 9 months of pregnancy-induced abstinence

How about having a more formal do first (including lunch for those who want/can afford) followed by general get together to which people can pitch up to as and when?

Ummmm.... Jul 5, 2004

Surely it doesn't have to be 'two camps'? I was just trying to voice a more flexible approach to cater to all needs. Attendees who are travelling some distance (Germany, The Cotswolds) will probably have to stay over, and may well choose to bunch together later on.
I would love to meet up from the outset and just go with the flow There is nothing wrong with structuring a more formal lunch-time meeting ... except Nicole might

two camps Jul 5, 2004

Well, Lucy, I wouldn't differ that hard between the two. But is is indeed a fact that the REAL useful information (i.e. how to avoid taxes instead of paying less, or how to get Trados second hand for nothing - don't ask me, I don't know...) come up late night. Well, a few pints always contribute to REAL answers instead of stereotypes.
I will sure stay away from one of these formal-name-plate-introductory-sucess-story meetings, where a lot of bla-bla is produced and where I keep asking me:

Free tip for beginners Jul 5, 2004

Well, welcome to our newbies (I noticed quite a few among the attendees), I would strongly recommend to you to stay longer that night and listen closely to the more experienced folks on how to handle this job.
This was what helped me most, when I started this job 16 years ago...

sorry, didn't mean to sound divisive! Jul 5, 2004

just a light-hearted comment, folks!

I'm happy to go with whatever's decided and give my full backing to Nicole in her organizational role!

Bonding rules Jul 5, 2004

Personally I favour the informal chat approach as proposed by Herbert . Not lectures on "How to use "WidgetTrans" but a chat about who we all are, how we do this, dot hat etc. It's amazing how useful (and indeed pleasant) that can be. And don't misunderstand Jerrie. I know for a fact Jerrie is a thunderingly decent chap who ir prepared to go out of his way to help and to bond with peers.

So I generally agree with the looser approach as being most benefical although I'm happy to follow Nicole's instructions, since she is going to the trouble of organising it.
I have seen notice boards about PowWows which have gone on forever because it took so long to reach consensus.

We have a venue! Jul 19, 2004

Having spent the weekend pub crawling (hic) for the greater good, I stumbled across a nice little pub which I think would make an excellent place to meet. The Lord Nelson Inn is a friendly, unpretentious pub with a great selection of real ales and some decent wines as well. Despite being within 5 minutes’ walk from Brighton station and very easy to find, it’s just off the tourist track but welcoming nonetheless. The Lord Nelson Inn is a friendly, unpretentious pub with a great selection of real ales and some decent wines as well. Despite being within 5 minutes’ walk from Brighton station and very easy to find, it’s just off the tourist track but welcoming nonetheless. AND they have a roomy conservatory at the back (‘Nelson’s Gallery’) which I’ve booked for our exclusive use from 3-6 pm. A cold buffet of mixed sandwiches etc is available at £3.50 a head if we’re interested. Take a look at their website: www.TheLordNelsonInn.co.uk.
As everyone seems to be keen on informality and flexibility, this seems an ideal venue for meeting like-minded linguists and sharing experiences over a drink or five, without the need for a set programme, agenda or indeed menu.
We can always book a table at a restaurant for when hunger strikes towards the evening (I can do this nearer the time when I have a clearer idea of numbers).
So, what do you think – is it a goer?

Hotels in Brighton! Jul 19, 2004

A little helpful pointer for those who need somewhere to stay. Needless to say, Brighton has zillions of hotels, guesthouses and B&Bs in all shapes and sizes, price ranges and locations. Here’s a useful site which gives an overview of what’s around: http://tourism.brighton.co.uk/accommodation/

I’ve pulled out a few that look ok, with reasonable room rates and central location:

Beach Hotel, Regency Sq
http://www.beachotel.co.uk/tariff.htm

Kings Hotel, Kings Rd - http://www.kingshotelbrighton.co.uk
have singles available for £90 per night (you can book online)

Quality Hotel, West St - http://tourism.brighton.co.uk/accommodation/
Have doubles available from £64.48 if you book online

Beach Hotel, Regency Sq
http://www.beachotel.co.uk/tariff.htm
reasonable room rates, as far as I can see

Hope it helps
