For starters, I haven’t had a single problem with a client for the last 5/6 years (at least). I have been working alone since 2006 (‘comme une grande’ as the French say) and I do like the fact that I have no interruptions and that I can organize my work as I please. I’m a widow and I've been living alone since my last daughter left “the nest” some 25 years ago. I loved being married (twice) but over the years I've become very used to my own company and that of my dog…

I just send word to the lads at the local tea house and they tool up and then we all pay a visit to the client.
There seems to be no end to these daft poll questions...

The Messageboard of Broken Dreams Feb 15, 2022

I walk a lonely road
The only one that I have ever known
Don't know where it goes
But it's home to me, and I walk alone

I walk this empty street
On the Boulevard of Broken Dreams
Where the city sleeps
And I'm the only one, and I walk alone

Once or twice Feb 15, 2022

I once had a client that owed me over 4,000 euros for a project and just ghosted me. It was so frustrating because I felt I had no support or guidance about what to do. The client wasn't based in my country so I couldn't go to the authorities or a debt collection agency.

It was sad because I had worked with the agency since the start of my career. When he started not paying on time, I checked the Blueboard on here and knew it wasn't going to turn out well as he had been blocked from posting. Eventually, he started paying me back in dribs and drabs and I recovered most of the debt minus a few hundred euros.

The last time I recall having a problem with a client was 20 years ago when one of them owed me USD 9,000. I finally got the money after a 2-year campaign. I was frustrated, but not alone, because other translators were in the same boat and we had the support of the organization's ombudsman.

As for feeling alone, when I worked as a translator in a bureaucracy, I sometimes came home and cried on my husband's shoulder. But he had died by the time I started freelancing. The working con

As for feeling alone, when I worked as a translator in a bureaucracy, I sometimes came home and cried on my husband's shoulder. But he had died by the time I started freelancing. The working conditions are so much easier that I've never felt challenged in my relationships with my clients - except as noted above.

Well, I mean I am alone mostly, but that's more or less par for the course so I don't take much notice. I'm mostly feeling upset or frustrated when I have a problem with a client. Problems are extremely rare nowadays though, in that I have a delightful set of clients (Covid seems to have weeded the only bad apple out!).
I limit payment problems by only working for people in the euro zone, and I know that the French translators' society can help with legal issues if ever I needed any help.

I felt far more lonely when the boss sold the company and I found myself working in an office with several other people, but whose work did not intersect with mine in any way - they were more on the sales and admin side. They'd be chatting amongst themselves while I had nobody to talk to. Then they hired a couple of new people who would be working with the others but in a role that required peace and quiet while they were thinking. They put these people in my office and that was lovely. We worked all day quietly, but then chatted non-stop at lunch and sometimes had drinks after work. Even though their work had nothing to do with mine, they were nice people and we were supportive of each other. That was one of the nicest periods in my working life.

AAMOF* I've just been in touch with an agency in Rome that hasn't paid me. Apparently they're all unwell (Covid). I handled this all by myself. Expecting payment ASAP.

*As a matter of fact

Thank to Proz.. NO Feb 15, 2022

Any time I have a payment problem with a client I make a non-payment report on Proz and they always support me. They warn the client and make them pay or ban them on site if necessary till they pay. It's just a great support, we don't need local authorities. Thanks again Proz

The Advantage Of Being Alone... Feb 15, 2022

...if a were to have any problems with a client or agency is that I would be that much more assertive with them to rectify the situation. Especially, since I am a woman.

I don't understand the question. I live alone and have done for more than thirty years, so I feel alone most of the time and that's great. I enjoy it.

I rarely have a problem with a client or agency, but if I do, I deal with it and move on.

I am married to my translation partner, so we can complain to each other about our respective or mutual clients as needed. We had to set some strict rules, though. No work talk during meals or in the car. And, if possible, no work talk in the evening.
Generally though, rather than complaining, we try to keep each other's spirit up. These past two years have been stressful for everyone.
