But using a pseudonym, as I don't use these sites to look for work or new contacts, so I'm not usually looking to engage with anyone else there apart from the odd "like" or comment.
I am on Facebook, not as a professional translator, and I use LinkedIn to see what the younger generation in my family are doing. I am on the Proz group on Facebook with my personal profile. I rely on my profile on Proz and on the ITI website to advertise my services.
I’m not on social media (professionally or otherwise) and I’ve very rarely used FB, TW or Instagram. I’ve been on LinkedIn for a few years but I’ve never completed my profile.

I have a LinkedIn profile but I rarely visit the site. Too much shameless self-promotion, brown-nosing and back-slapping. I know that's what it's for, but I find it excruciating. I tried playing along but couldn't keep a straight face. It's hard enough here (-: | | | Samuel Murray هولندا Local time: 07:20 عضو (2006) أنجليزي إلى أفيقاني + ...
On LinkedIn, I'm a translator. On Facebook, I'm just an ordinary guy with 500 friends. | | | P.L.F.
@Chris: you're right, not to mention the excruciating wankfest at the end of December – every single flipping year – when some "humbly" engage in the enumeration of their achievements. But, at least, on LinkedIn you can name, shame, and hashtag the bad actors that pollute our noble profession – but whose names we cannot mention on here, lest we hurt their delicate feelings of sharks – and have a semblance of solidarity, while thinking together about what to do next.

I've been on LinkedIn as a translator for years, and it's never led to any jobs. The only 'social thing' that occurred there was when I was privately contacted by a 'Pediatrician' (supposedly employed at WHO) some time towards the end of last year. She (who I must say had a very alluring photograph with a prominent, fetching rear end, which seemed to comprise most of her tiny photograph) seemed very interested in me for some inexplicable reason, and wanted to know all about my job and myself. After a message or two she insisted that we continue our conversations on Whatsapp messenger. At that point, nice rear end or no, I put two and two together, and decided to avoid a potential "please help a sick relative" scenario down the line, and save my hard earned cash. That's the only memorable thing I've experienced on LinkedIn so far. It hasn't led to any jobs, but it might have led to a 'love affair' if I hadn't nipped it in the bud. I'm sure there must be plenty of fish in the sea, operating out of Nigeria or some other place.

That is the only reason why I sometimes kind of regret deleting my LinkedIn account. I think I still have an abandoned personal profile on Facebook that I haven't checked since spring 2020 and am doing perfectly fine without it. I still use Instagram to see some content I find interesting and occasionally store photos from places I've visited, but not as a translator.

LinkedIn is also for people I know from real life, direct clients etc. (never found a direct client on LinkedIn, but they always want to connect on LinkedIn). One of my direct clients told me to get engaged on LinkedIn as he finds most of his clients there (he’s a business consultant in a specific niche, but obviously don’t know how translation industry works). I have a LinkedIn account and as Baran never forgets, it has actually brought me quite a bit of work. When I started freelancing I sent messages to almost everyone who might send me work, and quite a few did so immediately. Some kept me in mind and sent me work later on once they needed me or, in one case, once they were no longer bound by a contract with an agency. I have no idea what attracts people to my profile but I have also had a few people reach out to me and at least three times it has led to me getting work, including what has since become my favourite agency, because they send me the most interesting work, they send a considerable amount of work and they pay like clockwork. I don't have Instagram, I do have Facebook but I don't engage as a translator. I'm just an ordinary person and I have no idea how many friends I have on there. ▲ Collapse
As Christopher said above, it's just a pathetic website. Kinda funny most part of the time. [1 2] > | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: Are you on social media as a translator/interpreter (Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook)?
