Испанские ученые провели первое в истории страны исследование, проанализировав содержание асбеста в образцах тканей легких населения.
Полученные результаты подтвердили безопасность хризотил-асбеста.

Исследование «Первая идентификация наличия волокон асбеста в легких среди населения Испании» опубликовано в августе 2017 года в журнале “LUNG”, издательство Springer US. (First Identification of Pulmonary Asbestos Fibres in a Spanish Population, авторы M. I. Velasco-García, M. J. Cruz, C. Diego, M. A. Montero, D. Álvarez-Simón, J. Ferrer).

В группе «А» состояли 5 пациентов, никогда не имевших заболеваний легких, в группу «В» зачислили 20 работников судоверфей (представители этой группы в течение долгого времени контактировали с разными типами асбеста), в группу «С» были определены 13 больных раком легких.

После анализа результатов исследовательская группа во главе с доктором М.И.
Веласко-Гарсиа из отделения Пульмонологии Университетской больницы Vall d'Hebron отметила, что «поразительным является сохранение в легких исключительно амфиболов, что говорит о том, что хризотил удаляется в процессе дыхания».
Исследователи заявляют, что их открытие согласуется с опубликованными данными о том, что в легких пациентов, больных мезотелиомой, в подавляющем большинстве случаев встречаются волокна амфибола, несмотря на то, что наиболее часто используемым типом асбеста является хризотил.
Специалисты подчеркнули, что в легких испытуемых не оказалось волокон хризотилового асбеста несмотря на то, что докеры имели с ним дело на постоянной основе – большое количество продукции в кораблестроении производится из хризотил-асбеста.
Сведения, свидетельствующие об отсутствии связей хризотилового асбеста с риском развития заболеваний легких, публикуются в научной литературе не в первый раз, и в последние годы такие свидетельства становятся все более весомыми.

white asbestos (chrysotile) is safe
Spanish scientists conducted the first population study of asbestos content in samples of lung tissue undertaken in Spain.
The results confirmed the safety of chrysotile (white asbestos).

The First Identification of Pulmonary Asbestos Fibres in a Spanish Population trial was published in August 2017 in LUNG journal (Springer US Publishers). Authors of the publication: M.I. Velasco-García, M.J. Cruz, C. Diego, M.A. Montero, D. Álvarez-Simón, J. Ferrer).
Lung tissue sampling was performed in 38 subjects.
Group A included 5 subjects without any history of lung disease; Group B included 20 dockyard workers (members of this group had long-term contact with different types of asbestos); 13 lung cancer patients were assigned to the C group.
Samples of lung tissue were taken from all the participants in the study; the samples were then analyzed using a scanning electron microscope and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy.
An important outcome is confirmation of the fact that, in contrast with amphibole-class asbestos, fibers of chrysotile (a mineral traditionally used in Eastern European and CIS countries), even in cases of entering the lungs, leave the body freely, without any ill effects.
As noted by the team of researchers headed by Dr. M.I.
Velasco Garcia from the Department of Pulmonology at the University Hospital of Vall d'Hebron after analyzing the results of the study, "it is striking that only amphibole-class asbestos is retained in lungs, thus suggesting that chrysotile is removed from the lungs during breathing".
The researchers claim that their discovery is consistent with the published data on overwhelming prevalence of amphibole fibers in the lungs of patients with mesothelioma, despite the fact that the most commonly used type of asbestos is chrysotile.
Experts emphasized that there were no chrysotile fibers found in the lungs of the subjects of the study, despite the fact that the dockers were in contact with it on a regular basis: a considerable number of shipbuilding products are made from chrysotile.
The data suggesting that there is no association between chrysotile and the risk of lung diseases has already been published in the scientific literature, and throughout the recent years such evidence is becoming more and more significant.

It is important to note that the study by the Spanish scientists is consistent with other similar results of well-known British scientists who conducted their study in 2016 under the title "Pleural mesothelioma and lung cancer risks in relation to occupational history and asbestos lung burden" by Clare Gilham, Christine Rake, Garry Burdett, Andrew G Nicholson, Leslie Davison, Angelo Franchini, James Carpenter, John Hodgson, Andrew Darnton, Julian Peto; (published in Occupational & Environment Medicine).
The findings of this recent study largely repeat the results of the study conducted in Spain:
in lung samples of 133 and 266 patients who died from mesothelioma and lung cancer, respectively, only amphibole asbestos types (crocidolite and amosite) were found in 98% of cases.
The authors emphasize that since 1954 until the time of the complete ban of asbestos, Britain imported five million tons of asbestos, including 89% of chrysotile, 9% of amosite and 2% of crocidolite.
The study shows that, despite the rare use of amphibole, this particular asbestos type accounts for the most of the asbestos-related morbidity cases in the UK.
The authors emphasized that "the rapid elimination of chrysotile from the lungs with a half-life of 3 months can explain its virtual absence in tissue samples and therefore, the appropriate assessment of its effects is impossible...".
Therefore, this up-to-date publication has a serious impact on the perception of harmfulness of different types of asbestos and can change attitudes towards chrysotile which has become a pariah and assist the reassessment of chrysotile regulation in a number of countries where it was banned on the basis of incorrect safety data.
