Вся планета сидит на карантине. В Южно-Африканской Республике полицейские разгоняют толпы не желающих изолироваться водой и резиновыми пулями, чёрные трущобы Кейптауна объявлены зоной военных действий, в центре города оранжевым пламенем горит гора, богатые белые под шардоне записывают сториз. Ксения Мардина переехала в ЮАР десять лет назад и в своём письме рассказывает, как коронавирус пришёл в страну, где апокалипсис давно стал привычным делом и наложился на экономический коллапс, безработицу, миллионы ВИЧ-инфицированных и ежедневные перестрелки гангстеров.

ОГОНЬ И СТОРИЗ
— Чёрных вирус не берёт, — сообщила Синтия, она же Ньярай , няня моего двухлетнего сына. Родом из Зимбабве, она, как и тысячи африканских иммигрантов, приехала в ЮАР на заработки и взяла псевдоним, который белым проще выговорить и запомнить.
Шёл второй официальный день эпидемии коронавируса. Президент ЮАР Сирил Рамафоса уже объявил чрезвычайное положение, закрыл школы и авиасообщение с поражёнными странами. В стране было 60 заболевших, среди которых не нашлось ни одного чернокожего. Мы с Синтией стояли на кухне моего дома.
— Говорят, нужно держаться подальше от белых, — объяснила она, поймав мой удивлённый взгляд. И тут же добавила: — Но я, конечно, этому не верю. Мы все можем заразиться.
Расовый вопрос проявляется в ЮАР с возникновением каждой новой проблемы. Он принимает разные формы и заходит с новых углов, появляясь на повестке дня с постоянством малярийных комаров, которые вылупляются из застойных болот каждый сезон. Расовый вопрос прячется и за пандемией, и за тем, как в стране переживают любые катаклизмы.
Речь президента о введении режима чрезвычайного положения эффектно совпала с горными пожарами прямо в центре Кейптауна. Город обвивает склоны Столовой горы и горы Львиная Голова, на которых весь вечер воскресенья, 15 марта, горели оранжевым пламенем кустарники — в метрах от жилых домов. Коричнево-бурое небо, грохот пожарных вертолётов и ряды снимающих сториз зрителей — пожары разгорелись в богатых, а оттого преимущественно белых районах. Вместо того чтобы паниковать и спасать нажитое, все продолжили попивать воскресное шардоне, развлекая подписчиков весёлыми лайвами.
Те же самые пожары не раз случались в трущобах — бедных районах городов Южной Африки, где живёт чёрное население. Во время апартеида чёрным, метисам и индусам запрещалось жить в хороших районах города — зелёных, красивых и близких к центру. Для них были построены специальные резервации, зачастую в самых некомфортных климатических условиях. В Кейптауне это — равнины к югу от Столовой горы, где летом печёт солнце, а зимой постоянные потопы из-за сильных дождей. Люди живут в лачугах, сделанных в лучшем случае из тонкого гипсокартона, а в худшем — из фанеры, шифера и пластика. Чаще всего живут целыми семьями с общим доходом в 150–200 долларов в месяц и одним смартфоном на всех. Записывать сториз в моменты пожара не приходит в голову никому, даже местным миллениалам.

The entire planet is in quarantine. In the Republic of South Africa, the police break up crowds of those unwilling to self-isolate, with water and rubber bullets; the black slums of Cape Town were declared a zone of military operations; the mountain in the heart of the city is enveloped in orange flames; rich whites are drinking chardonnay and recording stories. Kseniya Mardina moved to South Africa ten years ago and in her letter, she relays how coronavirus came to a country where the apocalypse has long been a mundane affair overlapping economic collapse, unemployment, millions of HIV infected, and everyday gang shootouts.

FIRE AND STORIES
— The virus doesn’t infect blacks, — says Cynthia, a.k.a. Nyarai, a babysitter of my two-year-old. Born in Zimbabwe, she, like thousands of African immigrants, came to South Africa to work and took a pseudonym that is easier for whites to pronounce and remember.
It was the second official day of the coronavirus epidemic. Cyril Ramaphosa, the president of South Africa, had already declared a state of emergency, closed all schools, and stopped flights from affected countries. Out of the 60 cases in the country, there was not a single black person. Cynthia and I stood in the kitchen of my home.
— They say we should stay away from white people, — she explained, catching my bemused look. And immediately added: — But of course I don’t believe it. We can all get infected.
The race issue makes itself felt in South Africa every time a new problem emerges. It assumes different forms and approaches from new angles, resurfacing on the agenda with the consistency of malaria mosquitoes hatching from stagnant swamps every season. The race issue hides behind the pandemic and any other cataclysm the country faces.
The president’s speech on declaring a state of emergency dramatically coincided with mountain fires right in the center of Cape Town. The city wreathes the slopes of Table Mountain and Lion’s Head, where shrubs were burning in orange flames all Sunday evening, March 15, within just meters of residential buildings. Chestnut-brown sky, the roar of fire helicopters and the rows of spectators filming their stories — fires broke out in wealthy, and therefore predominantly white neighborhoods. Instead of panicking and saving their possessions, everyone kept sipping their Sunday Chardonnay while entertaining their followers with jolly “lives.”
These fires had happened time after time in slums — poor neighborhoods of South African cities inhabited by the black population. During the Apartheid, Blacks, Coloreds, and Indians were prohibited from living in good areas of the city — areas that were green, beautiful, and close to the center. Special reservations were built for them, often in the most uncongenial climatic conditions. In Cape Town, these are the plains south of Table Mountain, where the sun is ferocious in the summer, and floods are constant in the winter due to heavy rains. People live in shacks made, at best, with thin plasterboards, and at worst, with plywood, asbestos board, and plastic. Typically, entire families live there with a combined monthly income of $150-200 and share one smartphone. Recording stories when fires break out doesn’t cross anyone’s mind, not even local millennials.
