Source text - English Chapter Eight
Star woke to a crash. She jumped out of bed as the floor shook violently. Not good. Running to the door, she nearly tripped. Cursing as she reached it, she pulled the handle, then banged as hard as she could.
“Let me out of here!”
No one answered, so she grabbed her clothes and dressed quickly. She was about to start pounding again when the door flew open and Adam rushed in.
“Are you all right?” he asked.
Without thinking, Star ran straight into his arms. He wrapped them around her and squeezed tight.
“I’m so happy to see you,” she said. Still terrified, she felt much better holding onto his solid body. As she caught his spicy scent, memories of last night’s events tugged at her mind, and she became momentarily distracted. Adam had left her room sometime in the early morning. She’d woken as he climbed out of bed—he’d kissed her gently, murmured something about them both needing sleep, and departed. The damn door must have locked behind him.
She buried her face in his chest, savouring the smell and the warmth, but another tremor shook the room and brought her back to the present. “What’s going on?”
“I’m not sure. Let’s head out and see what we can find.”
Star grabbed her cigarettes and they took off. If this was the end, she wanted a final smoke before they perished.
Pausing at the top of the stairs, they surveyed the scene below. Pixies ran in every direction, some yelling to each other. Much of the artwork had fallen off the walls and the floor was littered with broken pieces of glass and ceramic. Instead of the usual pleasant illumination, an eerie light shone.
Holding Star’s hand, Adam led the way down the stairs. In the lobby area they saw Vesta and Roven, trying to make their way past debris and frantic bodies.
“What’s going on?” Adam asked the pixies, trotting to keep up with them.
“We have no idea. I think Zander is back, he should know. We’re headed to the comm room now.”
The four picked their way through the rubble, ducking every so often as chunks of plaster fell from above.
Star gaped at the figure hunched over the main console in the communication room. She’d expected to see an elderly man with grey hair and a beard, but this wizard appeared to be young, though who could tell with these pixies? He was broader than most of the others and probably much taller when standing. With his round glasses, bald head, and deep brown skin, Star wondered if he was a pixie at all. His fingers flew over the instruments and he muttered under his breath.
“Are you the two humans responsible for this disaster?” he asked, turning his head to glare at them.
Star shrank under his gaze.
“I’m Adam and this is Star. What’s going on? What disaster? We didn’t do anything.”
He turned his angry stare to Vesta and Roven. “There’s a star in our atmosphere going supernova right now, that’s what’s going on. The king brought it here from the Nesophony Galaxy, apparently because of these two humans and at your suggestion. Why in the heavens would you tell him to do something that ridiculous?”
“But we just made that up to distract him. We didn’t know there was a star going supernova. You mean King Gaius actually found one? In that galaxy?” Vesta moved to the instrument panel for a closer look.
“He did indeed and now this burning mass is right above Porrima. We have to get it out of here, quick. The effects from the star are causing severe electrical disturbances and tremors, and very soon it’s going to explode.”
“What can we do?” Adam asked, joining Vesta as she observed the readings.
“I’m attempting to push the rock farther out, so when it does explode it won’t affect this planet or Kastra. The transporter is useless at this point. I’m using magic but I can’t generate enough power.” The wizard stood and began to pace, his robes swirling around him. “I could certainly concentrate better if those damn pixies would stop all their yelling and carrying on.”
Translation - French Chapitre Huit
Star fut réveillée par une secousse. Elle quitta précipitamment son lit tandis que le sol tremblait violemment. Ça ce n’est pas bon signe. Courant vers la porte, elle manqua de trébucher. Poussant un juron en atteignant la porte, elle tira sur la poignée, puis frappa aussi fort qu’elle le pouvait.
« Laissez-moi sortir ! »
N’obtenant aucune réponse, elle saisit ses vêtements et se rhabilla en toute hâte. Elle était sur le point de recommencer quand la porte s’ouvrit grandement sur Adam qui se précipita dans la pièce.
« Tout va bien ? » demanda-t-il.
Sans réfléchir, elle se jeta aussitôt dans ses bras. Il l’entoura de ses bras et la serra fort.
« Je suis si heureuse de te voir », lui dit-elle. Encore pétrifiée de peur, elle sentit qu’il valait mieux rester suspendue à son corps solide. En sentant son délicat parfum, les souvenirs de la veille lui revinrent en mémoire, ce qui eût pour effet de la distraire momentanément. Adam avait quitté sa chambre très tôt le matin. Elle s’était réveillée quand il quittait le lit—il l’avait alors embrassée avec douceur, murmuré quelque chose à propos de leur besoin mutuel de repos, puis il était parti. Cette foutue porte avait dû se verrouiller derrière lui.
Elle cala son visage contre son torse, savourant son parfum et sa chaleur, mais une autre secousse fit vaciller la pièce et la ramena à la réalité. « Que se passe-t-il ? »
« Je ne suis pas sûr. Sortons et voyons ce qu’on peut trouver. »
Star attrapa son paquet de cigarettes et ils quittèrent la pièce. Si c’était la fin pour eux, elle désirait s’envoyer une dernière clope avant de mourir.
Du haut des marches, ils observèrent la scène sous leurs yeux. Les lutins couraient dans tous les sens, certains hurlaient entre eux. La plupart des œuvres d’art étaient tombées des murs et le sol était jonché de bris de verre et de céramique. Il n’y avait désormais plus cette lumière apaisante, mais une lumière angoissante.
Tenant Star par la main, Adam les conduisit en bas des marches. Une fois dans le lobby, ils aperçurent Vesta et Roven essayant de se frayer un chemin à travers les décombres et la panique ambiante.
« Que se passe-t-il ? » Demanda Adam aux lutins, obligé de trottiner pour s’adapter à leur rythme.
« Nous n’en savons rien. Je pense que Zander est de retour, il en sait sûrement quelque chose. Nous nous rendons de ce pas à la salle de communication. »
Tous les quatre se frayèrent un chemin à travers les décombres, esquivant aussi souvent que possible, car les pièces de plâtre s’effondraient du plafond.
Star observa béate le personnage penché sur le poste principal de la salle de communication. Elle s’attendait à voir un vieillard avec des cheveux et la barbe grisonnants, mais ce sorcier était en réalité plus jeune, quoique... on n’était jamais trop sûr avec ces lutins. Il était plus balèze que la plupart, et certainement plus grand encore sur ses deux jambes. Des lunettes rondes, un crâne chauve, la peau d’un brun foncé, Star se demandait s’il était réellement un lutin. Ses doigts allaient d’un instrument à l’autre tandis qu’il marmonnait dans sa barbe.
« C’est vous les humains responsables de ce désastre ? », demanda-t-il en tournant la tête pour les fusiller du regard.
Star se sentit rapetisser face à son regard.
« Je suis Adam, et elle c’est Star. Que se passe-t-il ? Et de quelle catastrophe parlez-vous ? Nous n’avons rien fait. »
Il redirigea alors son regard furibond vers Vesta et Roven. « Il y a une étoile dans notre atmosphère qui est en train de se transformer en supernova, voilà ce qui se passe. Le roi l’a faite venir ici depuis la galaxie Nesophony, apparemment à cause de ces deux humains et parce que vous le lui avez suggéré. Pourquoi diable lui avez-vous suggéré quelque chose d’aussi absurde ? »
« Nous... nous avons juste inventé ça pour le distraire. Nous n’avions aucune idée qu’il y avait une étoile qui se transformait en supernova. Vous insinuez que le roi Gaius en a réellement trouvé une ? Dans cette galaxie ? » Vesta se rendit sur le tableau de bord pour voir tout ça de plus près.
« Eh bien il l’a fait, et maintenant il y a une masse ardente juste au dessus de Porrima. On doit s’en débarrasser, et vite ! L’influence de l’étoile est en train de causer des perturbations électriques et des secousses, et très bientôt tout va exploser. »
« Comment pouvons-nous aider ? » Demanda Adam en rejoignant Vesta qui étudiait les données.
« J’essaie de repousser l’astre afin qu’au moment de l’explosion ni Kastra, ni cette planète n’en soient affectés. Le transporteur est inutile à ce stade. Je me sers de la magie, mais je ne parviens pas à générer suffisamment de pouvoir. » Le magicien se leva et accéléra la cadence, faisant tournoyer ses vêtements au passage. « Je serais certainement plus concentré si ces foutus lutins pouvaient cesser leurs cris et leurs gesticulations. »
