Dutch term

economisch verkeer

Dutch to English Social Sciences Law (general) Staatscourant
Colleagues, wonder if you could help:

arbeid verricht in het economisch verkeer en gericht op het verwerven van inkomen;

This is an excerpt from de Staatscourant, but even though I do get lots of Google hits, I somehow cannot phantom the "economic traffic" in this context. I am thinking more along the lines of economic market.

TIA

economic market

I agree with you Marijke, my instinct would also be to refer to this as the economic market.

agree Tina Vonhof (X) : I would choose this if it's meant to be on a fairly large scale, for example within the European market.

commercial field

Terminologie Financieel Management:
handel en verkeer – trade and commerce
verkeer (handel) – trade, commerce

These areas are the components of economic activity

Economische verkeer = activiteiten met een economisch doel. Dus winst maken en inkomen genereren.

Perhaps you could translate the whole piece as 'work for pay or profit' and drop 'economisch verkeer' because this is implicit in the English phrase.

Correction: I actually meant 'work performed for pay or profit'
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tina Vonhof (X) : This is an excellent translation, short and sweet but I still wouldn't choose it because I would want to preserve the somewhat laborious wording of the source text.

a bit shorter than I intended (see my correction, which I know doesn't address your reservation). Laborious would be fine but I don't think the suggestions made so far sound natural in the given context
neutral Albert Stufkens : In fact, the whole sentence can be shortened to "has worked for an income"

I agree with your comment; it depends on the entire sentence
