I find this abbreviation in the heading of a medical report, after the name of the person in charge of the department.
In my document, I have:
Presidio Ospedaliero di ABC
Servizio di XYZ
*Responsabile FF*: Dr.ssa Sofia Loren [yes, I changed the name]
I find many examples of this abbreviation online, many of them but not all in a medical context. For example:
"Responsabile FF Medicina Legale - ASL DI NOVARA"
"U.O. di PRONTO SOCCORSO RESPONSABILE F.F.: DR. ELIO SCARAMUZZINO ..."
"Responsabile f.f. dell'U.O.C. Igiene degli Alimenti e della Nutrizione ASREM "
...e così via.
What does the 'F' stand for here (I suspect the doubling - FF - means it's a plural noun)?

I found Facente funzioni in Word reference, translated to *locum tenens* in Latin, which is defined in English as "Someone (physician or clergyman) who substitutes temporarily for another member of the same profession"
