I know this is a familiar word, but as something to be avoided in relation to 'appetite for learning' I can't really see what it means.

to see what follows it, I think.
In the first part, it says "...ごまかされたりすることなく...大事にされ",
and in the second part, "...ごまかされたりすることなく...育む".

something different from what it is or taken lightly/unimportantly.
