În baza art.17 din Legea cu privire la BNM, nr.548-XIII din 21 iulie 1995, Banca Naţională a Moldovei stabileşte băncilor cerinţe de menţinere a rezervelor obligatorii. Rezervele obligatorii (RO) reprezintă nivelul minim al rezervelor pe care o bancă autorizată trebuie să le deţină la BNM. RO se utilizează în scopul schimbării cererii banilor de rezervă pe scurtă durată şi respectiv a ratei de dobîndă pe termen scurt.

The ECB requires credit institutions established in the euro area to hold deposits on accounts with their national central bank. These are called "minimum" or "required" reserves.
