Discussion

Renato Gonzalez Sep 3, 2010:
"praise songs" or "spiritual songs". I think both would be nice. your choice! :)
(not "songs of").
depending on where it is happening, for example, if while working, in Africa, old times, there were the worksongs. but I think "praise songs/spiritual songs" would be the best choice.
Lucy Phillips (asker) Sep 3, 2010:
the expression 'songs of praise' does exist in English, maybe I should stick to this? unfortunately, for many UK English speakers at least, its first association is with a TV programme of the same name!
Renato Gonzalez Sep 3, 2010:
by the way, "aves" = louvores (e.g. ave maria)
Renato Gonzalez Sep 3, 2010:
spiritual songs I think so! :)
So, I'd use spiritual songs.
Lucy Phillips (asker) Sep 3, 2010:
a bit more context the writer here is making a contrast between someone in their 'African' state who later goes to work in the city and talks in a "borrowed language". Proselytized religion has also been referred to. So, I wonder if 'spirituals' might work here?

Example sentence:

The day was the same. The people didn’t stop praying or singing Hail Marys despite the rain. The Rosary in the Church was also extraordinary. It was an unforgettable day, full of fervor and sacrifice

In front of the barricades set up to separate the news media from the home, women from Mothers Against Repression formed a prayer circle in front of the Gonzalez home and began singing Hail Marys.
