From an article by Carlos Monsiváis on different meanings of Americanization. He's completely lost me on this one... Thanks for any clues offered:

shift from attending midnight mass as a conditioned reflex to hanging out at Happy Hour
I think a little more redundancy is needed to make the process clear.
I understand 'largo' in this case to be drawn-out, not sudden.

Comment: "thanks to all for your ideas, this seems to encompass as much of it as possible. turns out with Monsiváis 'adding redundancy' is often the only way of making any sense..."

going to (Christmas) Midnight Mass is no longer a reflex action
yes, Isabel has the right idea. These people conditioned to automatically go to Mass as if it's part of their reflexes go to the pub instead (though Happy Hour not at midnight so text needs a bit of rearranging)

...sharp turn from the conditioned reflux of midnight mass, to...

substituting Christmas Mess for Happy Hours
I think it's a way of referring the mentalities changes that people from latin countries (very religious) suffer when they get to America (where Happy Hours rule)

There is a misspelling mistake (Mess when it should be Mass) which I think doesn't prevent anyone who reads my suggestion to understand it, unless if the person didn't read my explanation.
I would like to add that when we are giving suggestions, when are OFFERING our translator's working time for FREE, so I think we show our good will and hope everyone who participates is doing the same

: Mess means something quite different in EN :)//sorry but the misspelling was so bad that it quite detracted from the answer! Which I don't think quite translates the whole term... (como reflujo condicionado)?

ehehhe, misspelling! But I'd prefer having your opinion on the usefulness of the answer...

: That's the basic sense of it (correcting the misspelling). But the translation needs more work to get the subtlety of "largo" and maybe include the "reflejo condicionado" part (not "reflujo" there's a misspell in the original).

I guess you're referring to what I answered to another person's "Neutral" comment...did you read my NOTE? It's alright to point a misspelling; it's alright to give each one's own answer; but in that case why "neutral", not "disagree"?

...Rooster's Mass path turns into a escape for the happy hours
"Moreover, reflect the American way, it is not by transmission but by simple facsimile, most often, and the Rooster's Mass path turns into a escape for the happy hours, this outcome does not reflect an obsessive study of culture but to the simple acquisition of appearances”
