Ekscimera lāzera audu noņemšanas process tiek saukts par "ablative photodecomposition" – ablatīvo (ablācija – erozija) fotosairšanu. Ir svarīgi saprast, ka ekscimera lāzers nenoņem audus kā ar skalpeli, drīzāk tas ablatīvi (iztvaicē) noņem audus no radzenes virsmas.
