English term

energy stems

English Tech/Engineering Forestry / Wood / Timber
Multi-Tree Handling (MTH) unit is an optional equipment intended for harvesting energy stems and other small stems simultaneously.

What does the term "energy stems" refer to?

Thanks in advance!

I understood the asker to be requesting simply an explanation of what the term meant, so I didn't give too much consideration to whether it was actually the right term in the first place :-). Again, only context will tell - this machinery may be specifically for harvesting stems rather than other parts of the plants, or it may devour the lot.

@ Armorel You do have a point! More context would probably resolve the issue. On reflection, I would stick stick with "energy wood", but change the last part back to "and other small stems". I was unable to find "energy stems" as a valid term, but stand to be corrected.
Armorel Young Aug 3, 2011:
@ Allison Surely "energy stems and other small stems" means, as worded here, "stems that will be used for energy and other small stems that won't", whereas your rephrasing classes the whole lot as stems to be used for energy.

energy wood

This appears to be the more correct term: "The harvesting of energy wood from young stands is increasing as the demand for renewable wood fuel is growing. Energy wood consists of stems, tree tops, branches and needles,
depending on the size of the trees and the logging method used. The current forest inventory
and planning systems used in private forests in Finland do not produce estimates of energy
wood components. In stands typical for energy wood harvesting, a large share of energy
wood consists of trees smaller than the minimum size for pulpwood." from the link referenced below, and others if you google.

If you replace your "energy stems" with "energy wood", I do not know what you will do with "and other small stems", which would now seem gratuitous.

Perhaps rephrase thus: "...intended for the simultaneous harvesting of energy wood, including small stems."
