What confuses me is that they already had their medical examination and this sentence marks the last step before exiting to another area.
I think that neilmac is right because they might have prosthesis or items that cannot be carried to another area and must be kept after the medical examination in a safekeeping area.

Just posted an answer, but as a PS, "resguardo" could also refer to the "holding area" for incomers where they leave their belongings and pass a medical examination upon admittance. I agree with Yvette about needing more context.

This is a list of procedures for admission of inmates.
The classification of belongings is done by the Clothing Reception Officer.

You can use synonyms for "area", such as "department/section/repository/facility"... etc. As our colleague notes above, more context is needed if you want "baby bear's porridge"...
