French term

évaluation sanctionnelle

French to English Other Education / Pedagogy
My term comes from a document describing the courses and evaluation methods for a Master's degree and graduate diploma in a specialized nursing field.

Evaluation is two-pronged, comprised of a "évaluation formative" and "évaluation sanctionnelle".

This reference handily gives a description (sort of) of both types of evaluation. http://www.usherbrooke.ca/dep-medecine-famille/fileadmin/sit...

However, I am still stuck coming up with a succinct term in English as I can't tell the difference. They are both evaluations done in the work placement or residency setting, but I don't know the difference.

This reference seems to suggest that the translation would be 'summative assessment' (vs. formative assessment): http://www.cdc.qc.ca/multites/mtw.exe?linktype=tx&w=3020&k=d...

Some confirmation would be most appreciated!

Discussion

Laura Molinari (asker) Nov 19, 2014:
Sorry to close without awarding points I hate to do this, but I wish some of the discussions had been entered as answers and I could award points. This was a highly confusing term. Given the descriptions found in many places, by all accounts this would correspond to a 'summative assessment'. However, this program has sommative already. Based on the description, I saw no option but to use 'final' as it encompasses all other evaluations. Thanks for all the help!
philgoddard Nov 14, 2014:
Jane If you put "final" as an answer, I'd agree with you.
Laura Molinari (asker) Nov 14, 2014:

Voici les évaluations qui seront cumulées (then lists summative evaluations, self-evaluation, evaluation of presentations, etc.)
Laura Molinari (asker) Nov 14, 2014:
I spoke too soon... The document evaluation section has the following:

Modalités d'évaluation des apprentissages
4.1.1 Évaluation formative
4.1.2 Évaluation sanctionnelle
4.1.3 Évaluation sommative

So even though the description fits, it can't be 'summative' in this case.
Laura Molinari (asker) Nov 14, 2014:
Aha! I think I have my answer... At: http://www.cmu.edu/teaching/assessment/basics/formative-summ...

What is the difference between formative and summative assessment?
Formative assessment
The goal of formative assessment is to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning. More specifically, formative assessments:
help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and target areas that need work
help faculty recognize where students are struggling and address problems immediately
Formative assessments are generally low stakes, which means that they have low or no point value.

Summative assessment
The goal of summative assessment is to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark.
Summative assessments are often high stakes, which means that they have a high point value. Examples of summative assessments include:
a midterm exam
a final project
a paper
a senior recital

Well, Jane beat me to it, but two of us can't be wrong :-)
philgoddard Nov 14, 2014:
I don't understand the connotations of "sanctionnelle", but based on your first reference, "final" or "exit" would be an appropriate translation.
Jane Phillips Nov 14, 2014:
If so I'd go for something like an end of training or final confirmation appraisal/assessment
Jane Phillips Nov 14, 2014:
Could this be using sanction as given by termium in the sense of homologation or approval. So during the training period the nurse has a training evaluation which actually contributes to the learnining process and at the end of the training period the evaluation defines whether or not they have reached the required level?

benchmark assessment

This suggest that this is assessment is marked or graded in terms of some external standard, as opposed to one where the mark is to give the student feedback on progress, but which does not contribute to the final mark or assessment.
An alternative might be 'graded asessment'.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Daryo : your own reference places "benchmark assessments" during the learning process, not at the end

The asker's information (see "I spoke too soon" above) shows clearly that this is a midway, not a final assessment. The end assessment is an "evaluation sommative".
