En dehors de 'apaiser' et 'atténuer', le verbe 'amortir' communique bien ce sens de réduire le choc.

Plutôt loin du mot à mot c'est vrai, mais c'est le terme que j'utiliserais à la place de ce "softening event" pour quelque chose qui en théorie du lien sert à le resserrer ou le renforcer
