Polyoxyethylen-triglycerids (z.B. Macrogol-1500-Glyceroltriricinoleat DAC oder Polyoxyl-35
Castor oil NF). Die Anzahl der PEG-Einheiten beträgt n = 70-80.
Bei der Serie 1 ***handelt es sich*** um die doppelt positiv geladenen Ionen der Serie 2 unter
Anlagerung von jeweils zwei Na+- oder K+-Ionen."

I'd simply rework it and say "series 1 consists of/is made up of the double-positive charged ions of series 2, etc." I've often translated "es handelt sich um, es geht um, etc." simply as "is" or "are."
