: Imho, in figurative painting "сюжетная основа" and "сюжет" are different things. Most of your references above are to "сюжет"<->"subject", and only one to "subject matter" which may well be translated as "сюжетная основа" rather than "предмет изображения"

Figurative art itself is a subject matter, because subject matter can be representational from natural world (fig. art), repr. from imaginative world, abstract, non-objective. мне кажется, суб. основа может быт напр. животные, человек и т.д.

Кандинского считают родоначальником абстрактной живописи. Путь нового искусства художник видел как необходимый переход от изображения внешних форм мира к их внутреннему содержанию. Мастер стремился выразить свои ощущения не предметными формами через тот или иной сюжет, а живописными средствами. Он добивается определенного эмоционального отклика зрителя только при помощи цвета, линии и абстрактной формы. Сюжетная основа, без которой немыслимо фигуративное искусство, здесь отсутствует. Вместо привычных жанров Кандинский различает импрессию, импровизацию и композицию. Импрессия – выражение непосредственных впечатлений от натуры, или "внешней природы". Импровизация – выражение процессов внутреннего характера, возникающее внезапно, главным образом бессознательно. Это впечатление от "внутренней природы". Композиция – синтез впечатлений от "внешней" и "внутренней" природы. "Импровизация 7" – одна из ранних работ художника. Фигуративные формы здесь словно растворяются в движении плоскостей и линий, сложно сгармонированных по цвету.
