Se expide el presente diploma que lo acredita como tal

Discussion

Rosa Paredes Nov 27, 2022:
Diploma Depending on the country of origin, this could be the the piece of paper (diploma, or degree) or a Professional License which is granted after obtaining a degree and allows the graduate to work in the field.
Luisa Veyán Santana (asker) Jun 13, 2017:
Diploma por haber concluido satisfactoriamente los estudios de la Carrera Profesional de Diseño de Moda. Se expide el presente diploma que lo acredita como tal.
Reed James Jun 13, 2017:
forgot to add... is issued.
Reed James Jun 13, 2017:
More context would help What does that "lo" stand for? It doesn't stand for diploma because it would make no sense for the diploma to accredit the diploma... Could it be something like: This diploma that accredits/certifies (Juanito Pérez) as (whatever he studied or is licensed as).

The present diploma [formally] recognizes him as such.

"Se expide el presente diploma" strikes me as redundant.

I assume that "tal" refers to the degree earned (if diploma is from an institution of higher learning) or graduation attained (if diploma is from a secondary school).

Given Luisa's clarification, I would amend my suggestion to:

The present diploma recognizes his satisfactory completion of this program of study.

This is the language used in diplomas in the US. Replicating the use of pronouns will produce strange (if not incomprehensible) English here.

agree AllegroTrans : "This diploma" - not "the present diploma" - which is pure Translationese

Yes, "this diploma" is perhaps better. Thank you.

This diploma awarding him this degree is issued

There are a few ways to translate diplomas. In Spanish-speaking countries, you are licensed as a practitioner of whatever profession you studied. In English-speaking countries, you usually study a major and receive a degree (B.A., B.S.) that allow you to practice a profession. Some fields of study require further certification (i.e., doctor, lawyer, accountant). I prefer to translate diplomas as reflecting the degree and not the licensed profession which really does not exist as such for most majors.
