Se hacen anotaciones en los certificados/actas/partidas del estado civil (nacimiento, matrimonio, defunción) cuando ocurre alguna circunstancia (generalmente posterior a la inscripción original) que condiciona, limita, modifica o cambia el contenido del acta original. Por ejemplo, esto es práctica común (y obligatoria en Venezuela) cuando legitima a un hijo nacido fuera del matrimonio o cuando alguien se casa o se divorcia en el extranjero.
Dichas anotaciones pueden hacerse al margen del documento o al reverso del mismo.
