The technique of screeding, i.e. making your wet concrete flat and reasonably smooth, is usually done with a straight-edge (here the "règle"). See https://www.concretenetwork.com/concrete/concrete_tools/scre... and many other refs to "screed" or "straight-edge". There are lots of endlessly fascinating U-tube videos....
