Portuguese term
mandar o verão
I'm currently working on a translation for a novel and I'm a bit stuck on the meaning of the following phrase:
"As paredes continuavam mais que nunca caiadas de branco, mandava o verão que assim fosse e o branco imenso permitia afastar, o calor do sol tórrido."
I understand most of this sentence, but I'm a little confused as to the meaning of "mandava o verão". Can anyone shed some light on this for me?
Thanks!

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.
How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:
An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)
A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).
Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.
When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.
* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

as the Summer demands it to be
Thank you - that's a very helpful explanation! I decided to go with a combination of the answers I received here ("the summer demanded they be so"), but I appreciated your explanation most. |
summer dictated
as summer wills it to be
summer warranted
Visiting family this summer warranted a visit to the Peanut Shop in downtown Lansing, Michigan.
Every late summer warranted a trip to Dolly Sods

Early nice weather warranted a trip to Marblehead Neck.
as convenient to the Summer
....as the arrival of summer dictates/demands
as dictated/demanded by the summer(time)
The walls continued/remained/were more whitewashed than ever, as dictated by the summertime, and the intense white allowed to keep away the heat of the scorching sun.
PS: “Intense white” sounds better than “immense white” IMHO.
