Dutch term

Rijksinstelling of staatsinstelling?

Dutch Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
can I use the term "rijksinstelling" with reference to official body established and run by the state in a republic? Or does the word "rijk" necessarily imply that it is either kingdom or empire?

I am translating it into Dutch

@Yevgeni: are you translating into (or writing in) Dutch or English?
Michael Beijer Jun 6, 2023:
as far as I know whether or not the body is established/run by a state in a republic, or a kingdom or empire, they are all used interchangeably:

staatsinstelling
rijksinstelling
overheidsinstelling
=
state institution
state establishment
state establishment
government establishment
government institution
etc.

het gaat om een instelling van hoger onderwijs. The name of the university expressly denotes that it belongs to Ukrainian state. So what are the options?

Could you use 'overheidsinstelling' ? Or is this not the issue?

Overheidsinstelling/staatsinstelling

While they are semantically interchangable, I would not use the term 'rijksinstelling', since you said it is about a university. It might cause confusion with the 'rijksuniversiteit', a very specific historical type of university. Additionally, it does not sound very idiomatic/modern in Dutch and it might have a subtext for (Belgian) readers that the state referred to is a monarchy.

'Overheidsinstelling' is the most natural, as others have suggested, but 'staatsinstelling' is just as understandable.

rijksinstelling

Hi!

Although it’s common to use ‘rijks-‘ in the context of a kingdom or empire, ‘rijksinstelling’ can also be used in the context of a republic, as far as I can see.

I found this document where (at the bottom right hand side) on page 5 ‘rijksfinanciering’ is mentioned, including reference to the republic of Croatia, among several kingdoms (Belgium and UK, for instance).

I hope this helps and I’m curious about other colleagues’ opinions.

‘Staatsinstelling’ would be correct in both contexts.
Best of luck!
