French term

une fonction décroissante

French to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering stresses in offshore design
La contrainte admissible en compression est une fonction décroissante de l'élancement.

I'm translating this as 'The allowable compression stress has a negative correlation with slenderness ratio.'

Is this accurate, or is there a better term?
Proposed translations (English)
4 +2 decreasing function

Discussion

Richard Benham Apr 3, 2007:
Negative correlation is a definite no-no: a decreasing function always goes down or stays the same with increasing parameter. Negative correlation is a statistical concept: there is a downward trend, but there may be exceptions.
