French term

État-major

French to English Bus/Financial Management
This has nothing to do with people in green, grey, brown uniform or camouflage outfits, and everything to do with (mainly) men in expensively-tailored business suits.

Quite a number of French-language businesses have started giving this name (i.e. État-major) to the unit which co-ordinates the activities of the undertaking across either the parent company or the Group as a whole.

Has anyone come across something other than / better than 'CEO's Office'?

In fact, the CEO's Office can be just one unit within the 'État-major'.

Many thanks,

Willis

"experience". Sorry. A typo.-
Generally these "think tank" units depend from the COO's or CEO's office.-

Comment: "I'm sorry, but I have to disagree strongly with the proposal that 'management' is the equivalent. It is too broad, reaches way down the hierarchical pyramid and does not express the decision making group which is very near the pinnacle of decision making in a large business. 'Executive', my information suggests, is not a term used in business contexts for a specific division or hierarchical group at the pinnacle. At the most, it applies to individual persons. Willis"

I think Willis is asking about "OFFICE"...

"Corporate StrategyGroup", headed by the "Chief of Staff" to the COO or CEO.

"État-major" refers to the concept in the military, of the "staff", or "joint staff" very different form the civilian meaning of "personnel". The term is NOT used in English. However the concept does indeed exist under various names. The most common is the one I gave. The "Chief of Staff" is usually a Senior VP who is empowered to lead his senior management colleagues in strategic planning, and who has some high-priced help (boy wonders) to assist him.

It is neither the "Executive committee" (or "executive")nor "the Senior Management Team" which are groupings of the heads of ALL business functions and not just the strategy-oriented group reflected in the "état-major" or the English concept of Corporate Strategy group

Executive Committee

See link to business update website below. It contains a reference to the 'etat-major' when talking about the 'Comité exécutif':

it goes on to discuss the positions of all the senior management / directors
