: "Малёк" не означает "не сидевший"/ Because "fish" is an "in-prison" term. "Малёк" is an underaged criminal, he can live at home.+You can say:" This youngster is our new fish"(a newcomer), but not "young fish

Comment: "now i know that fish is definitely the correct term, and 'baby fish' might be a good option for addressing a newcomer in this case (although not the only one) so thanks. 'punk' has references to sexuality that are unnecessary in my context. thank you all"

мапёк (малёк?)
(young) punk
"Punks"
Inexperienced younger inmates, more submissive than most inmates.
Look in any Prison Slang Dictionary.
Do not mistake with the term "punk" as we use it in life daily round: in prison the meaning is different.

: Dictionary is bullshiting, homosexual is not the only meaning."Punk" - originally means "that one who doesn't conform to the rules", in other words simply "a criminal"."Punk" in the prison (American prison) is "an outsider", "not a part of the community".

: Михаил, я не видела вашей "рыбы". Извините. Но с "панками" я не могу согласиться. Не знаю, как у вас, а у нас "панки" в тюрьме - это либо гомики, либо опущенные.

If what you want to stress is lack of serious criminal experience, with young age being only co-incidental, secondary factor. It also avoids too specifically ethnic uses like "youngsta" from Ebonics or too mild/gentlemanly "kid" from the likes of "Sundance Kid".

However, while coincidental, young age does play a part here. You can't really call some 50yo that without it becoming obviously derogatory and sneering.

- Can you spare me a cigarette, mate?
The term "next rat" could be used jokingly, or in that sense that an inmate is a potential informer, as spying and informing about one another are the typical features of the prison.

: Why didn't you like "fish" in your reference link? I thought that it was a common name for "newcomers". // By the way, I saved your link. It's awesome! I added some new words to my vocabulary. :-)

Хотя, по хорошему, это вопрос к "авторитетам" конечно ;-)
Если же возраст имеет значение, то тогда Pepsi Generation.
