Call me Ishmael. Some years ago--never mind how long precisely--having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world. It is a way I have of driving off the spleen and regulating the circulation. Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people's hats off--then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can. This is my substitute for pistol and ball. With a philosophical flourish Cato throws himself upon his sword; I quietly take to the ship. There is nothing surprising in this. If they but knew it, almost all men in their degree, some time or other, cherish very nearly the same feelings towards the ocean with me.
There now is your insular city of the Manhattoes, belted round by wharves as Indian isles by coral reefs--commerce surrounds it with her surf. Right and left, the streets take you waterward. Its extreme downtown is the battery, where that noble mole is washed by waves, and cooled by breezes, which a few hours previous were out of sight of land. Look at the crowds of water-gazers there.
Circumambulate the city of a dreamy Sabbath afternoon. Go from Corlears Hook to Coenties Slip, and from thence, by Whitehall, northward. What do you see?--Posted like silent sentinels all around the town, stand thousands upon thousands of mortal men fixed in ocean reveries. Some leaning against the spiles; some seated upon the pier-heads; some looking over the bulwarks of ships from China; some high aloft in the rigging, as if striving to get a still better seaward peep. But these are all landsmen; of week days pent up in lath and plaster--tied to counters, nailed to benches, clinched to desks. How then is this? Are the green fields gone? What do they here?
But look! here come more crowds, pacing straight for the water, and seemingly bound for a dive. Strange! Nothing will content them but the extremest limit of the land; loitering under the shady lee of yonder warehouses will not suffice. No. They must get just as nigh the water as they possibly can without falling in. And there they stand--miles of them--leagues. Inlanders all, they come from lanes and alleys, streets and avenues--north, east, south, and west. Yet here they all unite. Tell me, does the magnetic virtue of the needles of the compasses of all those ships attract them thither?
Once more. Say you are in the country; in some high land of lakes. Take almost any path you please, and ten to one it carries you down in a dale, and leaves you there by a pool in the stream. There is magic in it. Let the most absent-minded of men be plunged in his deepest reveries--stand that man on his legs, set his feet a-going, and he will infallibly lead you to water, if water there be in all that region. Should you ever be athirst in the great American desert, try this experiment, if your caravan happen to be supplied with a metaphysical professor. Yes, as every one knows, meditation and water are wedded for ever.
But here is an artist. He desires to paint you the dreamiest, shadiest, quietest, most enchanting bit of romantic landscape in all the valley of the Saco. What is the chief element he employs? There stand his trees, each with a hollow trunk, as if a hermit and a crucifix were within; and here sleeps his meadow, and there sleep his cattle; and up from yonder cottage goes a sleepy smoke. Deep into distant woodlands winds a mazy way, reaching to overlapping spurs of mountains bathed in their hill-side blue. But though the picture lies thus tranced, and though this pine-tree shakes down its sighs like leaves upon this shepherd's head, yet all were vain, unless the shepherd's eye were fixed upon the magic stream before him. Go visit the Prairies in June, when for scores on scores of miles you wade knee-deep among Tiger-lilies--what is the one charm wanting?--Water--there is not a drop of water there! Were Niagara but a cataract of sand, would you travel your thousand miles to see it? Why did the poor poet of Tennessee, upon suddenly receiving two handfuls of silver, deliberate whether to buy him a coat, which he sadly needed, or invest his money in a pedestrian trip to Rockaway Beach? Why is almost every robust healthy boy with a robust healthy soul in him, at some time or other crazy to go to sea? Why upon your first voyage as a passenger, did you yourself feel such a mystical vibration, when first told that you and your ship were now out of sight of land? Why did the old Persians hold the sea holy? Why did the Greeks give it a separate deity, and own brother of Jove? Surely all this is not without meaning. And still deeper the meaning of that story of Narcissus, who because he could not grasp the tormenting, mild image he saw in the fountain, plunged into it and was drowned. But that same image, we ourselves see in all rivers and oceans. It is the image of the ungraspable phantom of life; and this is the key to it all.

Nenn mich Ismael. Vor einigen Jahren - vor wie vielen genau tut nichts zur Sache - hatte ich kaum noch Geld in der Tasche und auch sonst nichts, was mich ans Festland gebunden hätte. So entschied ich mich, ein wenig zur See zu fahren und den nassen Teil der Welt kennen zu lernen. Das ist meine Methode, mit meinem Groll fertig zu werden und den Kreislauf in Schwung zu bringen. Immer wenn sich mein Gesicht verzerrt, wenn in meiner Seele ein verregneter, trüber November herrscht; immer wenn ich mich dabei erwische, unfreiwillig vor Bestattungshäusern stehen zu bleiben, und mich jedem Leichenzug anschließe, den ich treffe; vor allem aber wenn die Finsternis sich in mir breit macht, so dass es starker moralischer Prinzipien bedarf, mich davon abzuhalten, einfach auf die Straße zu treten und den Leuten gezielt die Hüte von den Köpfen zu schlagen, dann betrachte ich es als höchste Zeit so schnell wie ich kann aufs Meer zu kommen. Es ist mein Ersatz für Pistole und Kugel. Mit höchsten philosophischen Ansprüchen stürzte sich Cato in sein Schwert; ich begebe mich leise aufs Schiff. Darin liegt nichts Sonderbares. Auch wenn es ihnen nicht bewusst ist, teilen fast alle Menschen in diesem oder jenen Maße von Zeit zu Zeit meine Gefühle zum Meer.
Nehmen wir Manhattan: Eine Stadt auf einer Insel, umgeben von Anlegestellen wie die Inseln der Indianer von Korallenriffen - hier bringt die Brandung das Geschäft mit sich. Rechts und links führen die Straßen zum Wasser. In der Innenstadt wird eine hübsche Kaimauer von Wellen gewaschen und von Briesen gekühlt, die noch vor wenigen Stunden weit und breit niemand vom Land aus sehen konnte. Schau dir die Leute an, die dort aufs Wasser starren.
Sie flanieren an einem verträumten Samstagnachmittag durch die Stadt. Geh von Corlears Hook zu Coenties Slip und von dort an Whitehall vorbei gen Norden. Was siehst du? Wie stumme Wächter stehen in der ganzen Stadt tausende und abertausende ganz eingenommen von Ozeanfantasien. Einige an Stützpfeiler gelehnt, andere sitzen am Ende der Stege oder blicken über den bollwerkartigen Bug von Schiffen aus China und wieder andere hängen hoch oben in der Takelage als ob sie hofften, einen besseren Blick auf das Meer zu erhaschen. Aber all das sind Landmenschen; an Wochentagen - umgeben von Gips und Tapete - kleben sie an Bankschaltern, sind an Werkbänke genagelt oder an Schreibtische gefesselt. Wie also ist das zu erklären? Gibt es etwa keine grünen Wiesen mehr, auf denen sie sitzen könnten? Was tun sie hier?
Oh, schau! Hier kommen noch mehr, schnurstracks aufs Wasser zu, so als wären sie entschieden, hinein zuspringen. Eigenartig! Nichts scheint sie zufrieden zu stellen außer der äußersten Grenze des Landes; dort drüben im Schatten des Lagerhauses herumzulungern genügt ihnen nicht. Nein. Sie müssen so nah ans Wasser wie es nur irgendwie geht ohne hineinzufallen. Dort stehen sie, kilometerweit, tausende. Sie alle kommen aus dem Inland, auf Feldwegen und Gassen, auf Straßen und Alleen - von Nord, Süd, Ost und West. Hier aber kommen sie alle zusammen. Sollte es etwa die magnetische Kraft der Kompassnadeln all dieser Schiffe sein, die sie herlockt?
Ein anderes Beispiel. Nehmen wir an, du bist auf dem Land, etwas höher gelegen, voll mit Seen. Nimm irgendeinen Pfad, der dir gefällt und die Chancen stehen zehn zu eins, dass er dich in ein Tal hinunterführt und an einer Stelle, wo der Fluss breiter wird, endet. Darin liegt Magie. Nimm einen völlig geistesabwesenden Menschen, gefangen in tiefschürfenden Gedanken oder Träumereien - stell ihn hin und gib ihm einen kleinen Stoß, damit er anfängt zu gehen und er wird dich zweifellos ans Wasser führen, zumindest wenn es in der Gegend Wasser gibt. Solltest du jemals durstig durch die große amerikanische Wüste wandern, probier dieses Experiment am besten an einem Professor der Metaphysik aus, wenn deine Karawane das Vergnügen hat mit so jemandem zu reisen. Denn, wie jeder weiß, das Nachdenken und das Wasser sind auf ewig verheiratet.
Nehmen wir einen Künstler. Er will für dich den verträumtesten, schattigsten, ruhigsten, zauberhaftesten Teil der romantischen Landschaft im Sacoflusstal auf die Leinwand bannen. Was aber wird er ins Zentrum stellen? Dort stehen seine Bäume, mit hohlem Stamm, als lebte ein Einsiedler mit seinem Kreuz darin, hier döst die grüne Flur und dort seine Rinder, und aus der Hütte dort drüben steigt verschlafen der Rauch. Bis tief in entfernte Wälder windet sich ein verwinkelter Pfad, der hoch zu den verschränkten Gipfeln der Berge reicht, getränkt im Blau ihrer Hänge. Auch wenn das Bild bezaubernd ist und eine Kiefer ihre Seufzer wie Nadeln auf den Kopf dieses Hirten wirft, all das wäre umsonst, wären die Augen des Hirten nicht auf den zauberhaften Fluss vor ihm gerichtet. Geh im Juni in die Prärie. Wenn du Meile für Meile knietief in Feuerlilien stehst, was ist das einzige, das dir dort fehlt? Wasser - es gibt dort keinen Tropfen Wasser! Wären die Niagarafälle aus Sand, würden die Leute tausende Kilometer reisen, um sie zu sehen? Warum überlegte der arme Dichter von Tennessee, als er plötzlich zwei handvoll Silber erhielt, ob er sich einen Mantel, den er doch so dringend brauchte, kaufen sollte oder sein Geld in eine Wanderung zum Rockaway Beach investieren sollte? Warum ist so gut wie jeder gesunde Junge mit einer wachen Seele früher oder später mindestens einmal im Leben wie besessen von der Idee, zur See zu fahren? Warum hast du als Passagier auf deiner ersten Reise ein seltsames mystisches Beben verspürt, als du hörtest, das Land sei nun außer Sicht? Warum war den alten Persern das Meer heilig? Warum gaben die Griechen ihm eine eigene Gottheit, und warum gleich den Bruder des Zeus selbst? Sicherlich ist all das nicht ohne Bedeutung. Noch tiefer jedoch ist die der Legende von Narziss, der, weil er das ihn quälende, blasse Bild, das er im Brunnen sah, nicht zu fassen bekam und deshalb hineinsprang und ertrank. Genau das gleiche Bild sehen wir alle in jedem Fluss und jedem Ozean. Es ist das Bild des unfassbaren Phantom unseres Lebens; und das ist der Schlüssel zu allem.
