English to Spanish: Children's literature short story General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English One day, a very rich man named Akito walked into an old curiosity shop in Japan, looking for a kettle in which to make his tea. He searched and searched, and eventually found a bronze one that he liked, so he took it home to use that evening.
Later that day he cleaned the teapot till it shone like the sun. He put it down to dry and went to count his coins, but when he came back, it seemed like it had moved.
‘How strange’, he thought. ‘There’s no one else here, how could that happen? I must have imagined it’.

Source text - English Photos of faces fill our visual world. Live and frozen, selfies and not. Eyes, lips, eyebrows, cheeks and chins litter the digital landscape. We enhance, filter, crop, adjust, and retouch these photos to transform the flaws of spontaneous shutter clicks into an illusion of perfection. In spite of this blizzard of images, the deep connection we seek
with the people in them remains elusive.
In the world of painting, a parallel stack of canvases of
forgotten folk from centuries ago who could afford to sit
still while an artist worked to flatter and satisfy, populates
attics and auction houses. This volume of faces past was
the precursor of the countless images our smart devices
send to the Cloud, the metaphorical attic of our times.
What qualities propel a portrait beyond the oblivion to
the enduring? Portrait painters have long recognized an
accurate physical image alone falls short of capturing the
essence of an individual. A successful portrait requires
understanding and expression of interiority. The magic of da Vinci, Rembrandt and Velázquez transcends the centuries precisely because the artists revealed a window into the subject’s inner self.
Do Maria Clara Rossi’s contemporary canvases compel
us to contemplate and connect with the individuals she
has painted? Quality art requires engagement and what motivates that involvement varies with each viewer. Regardless, many elements encourage a connection and those factors merit thoughtful consideration.
Translation - Spanish Las fotos de caras llenan nuestro mundo visual.
