Source text - French Fin juin, fin des classes, déjà l’été calcine notre maison; nous devons attendre le soir pour avoir le droit de monter sur la terrasse. On redoute pour nous ces « coups de folie » que le soleil assène et que, malgré leurs imprécations et leurs marmites de sorcier, les guérisseurs maltais eux-mêmes ont tant de peine à dissiper. Bravant les consignes, échappant à la sieste, trois de mes frères s’y rendent néanmoins; pieds nus, ils jouent à éviter la brûlure des tomettes roses en se jetant les uns sur les autres de grands seaux de cette eau claire qui coule glacée des robinets de la buanderie. J’ai six ans. Je les envie. Nous, en bas, derrière les volets clos qui luttent vainement contre les feux de l’après-midi, espérons patiemment la délivrance crépusculaire tandis que, face à notre maison, les fidèles de la mosquée bercent notre obscure torpeur en psalmodiant sans fin les versets du Coran. J’entendrai toujours plus tard ce bourdonnement litanique dès que se manifestera, où que ce soit, une chaleur sèche, immobile, qui s’enfonce dans le creux des épaules, frappe de silence les oiseaux et suspend jusqu’au retour de la fraîcheur l’arôme du chèvrefeuille et des lys de sable.
Arrivé tardif, en surnombre, ma place n’ayant guère été prévue ailleurs, je partage la chambre de mes parents. Auguste et trouble univers des perceptions premières. Vers six heures du matin, le jour s’est déjà partout infiltré. Mon père se lève alors, ouvre grand les volets et parcourt toutes les pièces de la vaste demeure où dorment mes dix sœurs et frères; en chacune il fait entrer la lumière et le réveil, suscitant des protestations gémissantes, puis, après avoir fait sa toilette et sa prière, il se rend à son travail.
Pour l’heure, il est céréalier, vendant semoules et farines au magasin juste au-dessous de notre appartement. Dans notre demi-sommeil, nous pouvons l’entendre démonter les barres de fer qui clôturent les portes, tandis que passe, traînée par un mulet, la voiture-arrosoir de la ville. Dès que ma mère perçoit ces mêmes bruits, signes que la maisonnée se dérobe au contrôle paternel, elle se lève à son tour, referme tous les volets, reborde chaque enfant dans son lit et murmure : « Dors encore, mon enfant, ton père est passé. » Moi, je l’entends parcourir les pièces et je l’imagine s’éloignant jusqu’aux chambres du fond. Cette phrase qu’elle prononce comme le répons d’un psaume me remplit de gratitude tendre et des sensualité chaude. Je l’attends… Quand elle revient pour profiter encore elle-même de quelques instants de repos, je retrouve le sommeil dans une volupté protégée. C’était hier. C’est aujourd’hui. J’y suis tout entier.
Translation - English It’s the end of June and the end of school, summer is already burning through our house; we have to wait until the evening to be allowed to go out onto the patio. It’s feared that the sun will hit us with “moments of madness”, which the Maltese healers themselves find difficult to dispel, despite their curses and witches cauldrons. Going against advice, and escaping the siesta, three of my brothers go out there anyway; bare-footed, they play having to avoid the burn of the pink floor tiles by throwing big buckets of water on each other, which runs clear and icy cold from the taps in the laundry room. I’m six years old. I envy them. Downstairs behind the closed shutters which fight in vain against the sweltering heat of the afternoon, we patiently long for the relief of nightfall whilst, in front of our house, worshippers at the mosque soothe our gloomy lethargy by ceaselessly droning verses from the Koran. Being an unexpected late arrival to an already large family, I have to share my parents bedroom. The lofty and hazy world of my first impressions. At around six o’clock in the morning, daylight has already spread everywhere. So my father gets up, opens the shutters wide and goes through every room of the large house where my ten brothers and sisters are sleeping; he lets light into each room and wakes them up, provoking moans and protests, then, after having bathed and said his prayers, he goes to work.
For the time being, he’s a grain farmer, selling semolina and flours in the shop just below our apartment. In our light sleep, we can hear him take down the iron bars which enclose the doors, as the town’s water cart goes by, dragged by a mule. As soon as my mother detects these noises, signs that the household is no longer under Father’s supervision, it’s her turn to get up, she closes all the shutters, tucks each child back into bed and whispers: “Go back to sleep, my child, your father has gone.” I hear her go through the rooms and I imagine her moving away towards the bedrooms at the end. This sentence which she delivers like the response of a psalm fills me with tender gratitude and comforting warmth. I wait for her… When she comes back to make the most of a few moments of rest, I fall back asleep feeling blissfully protected. That was yesterday. This is today. I am entirely here.

Source text - French M. de Maruéjols ! chef de service de la maternité Sainte Cécile, il franchit tous les jours que Dieu fait, grâce à son automobile de marque étrangère toujours, les kilomètres qui séparent son hôtel particulier de Neuilly, de la porte de Châtillon, quartier plus populaire, où se trouve son Domaine.
Il porte avec élégance la maigreur et la calvitie naissante de ses soixante ans. Racé, raffiné, courtois et ponctuel, il nous arrive chaque matin à neuf heures quinze précises, en dépit des embouteillages parisiens. Sa ponctualité est l’effet d’une organisation rigoureuse de sa vie domestique : dès six heures trente sa femme de chambre commence par appeler Inter-Service-route et cette analyse de la concentration automobile qu’elle lui livre lui permet de réveiller à l’instant adéquat notre « Monsieur et Cher Maître ».
A neuf heures quinze, à quelques secondes près, il peut donc ranger sa Lancia ou sa Volvo à la place qui lui est réservée dans la cour ombragée de l’hôpital Sainte-Cécile.
Il pénètre alors sans bruit dans le hall, sans déclencher l’angélus traditionnel qui saluait encore son prédécesseur. Il s’incline fort poliment devant la secrétaire hospitalière, noire ou blanche, installée dans la cage vitrée de l’Admission, puis au niveau du bureau de la surveillante générale s’annonce plus ou moins impératif par une toux caractéristique que nous imputons, à tort ou à raison, aux deux paquets de Gitane qu’il fume quotidiennement. Ainsi mise en alerte, la brave femme bouscule le cul énorme que trente ans d’Assistance publique ont fait prospérer, conjointement à sa promotion, pour le propulser avec l’ensemble de sa personne, galons compris, jusqu’à ce Dieu le Père toussant. Alors se mettent en branle tous les téléphones intérieurs de la maternité pour le Grand Rassemblement dans le bureau du Maître : les voix se croisent, l’écho reprend en modulations variées : « Le Patron est là », « M. de Maruéjols est arrivé », ou encore : « Papa est là », « V’la l’boss » et j’en passe.
Translation - English Mr de Maruéjols! Head of department at the Sainte Cécile maternity ward, every day that God gives us, thanks to his always foreign branded automobile, he covers the miles which separate his private mansion in Neuilly and the porte de Châtillon, a more working-class neighbourhood, where his department is.
He wears the skinniness and the beginnings of baldness of his sixty years with elegance. Distinguished, sophisticated, courteous and punctual, he arrives here every morning at exactly quarter past nine despite the Parisian traffic jams. His punctuality is the result of a rigorous organisation of his domestic life: from half past six his maid starts by calling the Traffic Information Service and this analysis of the concentration of automobiles that she gives him allows our “Sir and Dearest Boss” to wake up at the appropriate time.
At quarter past nine, or a few seconds later, he can put his Lancia or his Volvo in the space reserved for him in the shaded courtyard of Sainte Cécile hospital.
He then silently goes into the entrance hall, without ringing the old Angelus bell which still paid tribute to his predecessor. He very politely leans down to the hospital secretary, a black or white woman, sat in the Admissions glass cage, then once he’s at the head supervisor’s desk he makes his presence known quite urgently with a characteristic cough that we put down to, rightly or wrongly, the two packets of Gitane that he smokes daily. Now ready to work, the good woman moves her enormous bum which has been fattened up by thirty years of being on benefits, along with her promotion, to propel it with the whole of her person, newly coloured uniform included, over to this coughing God the Father. So all the maternity ward’s indoor telephones are triggered for the Big Meeting in the boss’ office: voices pass over one another, echo takes over in varied tones: “The Boss is here,” “Mr de Maruéjols has arrived,” or even: “Dad is here,” “Here’s the boss” and so on.
