Source text - English €2 commemorative coins
Once a year, each country in the euro area may issue a €2 commemorative coin. These coins have the same features and properties and the same common side as normal €2 coins. What makes them different is their commemorative design on the national side. Only the €2 denomination can be used for commemorative coins. They are legal tender throughout the euro area. That means they can be used – and must be accepted – just like any other euro coin.
Most of these coins commemorate the anniversaries of historical events or draw attention to current events of historic importance. The very first €2 commemorative coin was issued in 2004 by Greece to commemorate the Olympic Games in Athens.
Designing and issuing the coins is the competence of the individual euro countries. The ECB's role regarding the commemorative but also all other coins is to approve the maximum volumes of coins that the individual countries may issue.
Coins jointly issued by all euro countries
So far, there are two commemorative coins that the euro countries have issued jointly: the first, in March 2007, to commemorate the "50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome" and, in the case of the second, in January 2009, the tenth anniversary of the euro is celebrated with a coin featuring the "10th anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union".
As a rule, euro countries may each issue only one €2 commemorative coin per year. Exceptionally, they are allowed to issue another, provided that it is a joint issuance and commemorates events of European-wide importance.
These coins use a common design on the national side, showing the name of the issuing country as well as the event commemorated in the respective language(s).
Website updates of €2 commemorative coins
Unlike banknotes, euro coins are still a national competence and not the ECB's. If a euro area country intends to issue a €2 commemorative coin it has to inform the European Commission. There is no reporting by euro area countries to the ECB. The Commission publishes the information in the multilingual Official Journal of the EU (C series).
The Official Journal is the authoritative source upon which the ECB bases its website updates on euro coins. The reporting process, the translation into 22 languages and publishing lead to unavoidable delays. The coin pages on the ECB’s website cannot therefore always be updated as timely as users might wish.
If the ECB learns of a euro coin that has not yet featured in the Official Journal, only its image will be posted on the ECB’s website, with a brief statement that confirmation by the European Commission is pending.

Uma vez por ano, cada um dos países da área do euro pode emitir uma moeda comemorativa de €2. As moedas comemorativas têm os mesmos elementos e propriedades, bem como a mesma face comum que as moedas de €2 normais. O que as distingue é o desenho comemorativo exibido na face nacional. Só é permitida a emissão de moedas comemorativas de €2. As moedas comemorativas têm curso legal no conjunto da área do euro, podendo – e devendo – ser aceites como qualquer outra moeda de euro.
A maioria comemora o aniversário de acontecimentos históricos ou chama a atenção para eventos actuais de relevância histórica. A primeira moeda comemorativa de €2 foi emitida em 2004 pela Grécia, por ocasião dos Jogos Olímpicos de Atenas.

Moedas comemorativas emitidas em conjunto por todos os países do euro

Actualizações da informação sobre as moedas comemorativas de €2 disponibilizada no site do BCE
Ao contrário das notas, as moedas de euro continuam a ser da responsabilidade de cada país e não do BCE. Se um país da área do euro tenciona emitir moedas comemorativas de €2, deve comunicá-lo à Comissão Europeia, não sendo necessário informar o BCE. A Comissão publica a informação no Jornal Oficial da UE (série C).
O Jornal Oficial da UE é uma publicação multilingue fidedigna com base na qual o BCE actualiza a informação sobre as moedas de euro disponibilizada no seu site. O processo de comunicação, a tradução para 22 línguas e a subsequente publicação provoca atrasos inevitáveis. Por esse motivo, nem sempre é possível actualizar a informação que o BCE disponibiliza no seu site tão atempadamente quanto os utilizadores desejariam.
Nos casos em que o BCE tenha conhecimento de uma moeda de euro ainda não apresentada no Jornal Oficial da UE, apenas a imagem da mesma será exibida no site do BCE, acompanhada da informação de que pende a confirmação por parte da Comissão Europeia.
