Source text - German Im All herrscht dichter Verkehr: Unzählige Satelliten umschwirren die Erde und ab und an schauen auch noch vagabundierende Asteroiden, Kometen und Meteoriten vorbei. Hinzu kommen Weltraumtrümmer wie ausgebrannte Raketenstufen und Bruchstücke von explodierten Raumfahrtobjekten, die den Orbit in einen Schrottplatz verwandeln.
Man schätzt, dass sich derzeit etwa 20 000 Objekte mit einer Mindestgröße von zehn Zentimetern in der Erdumlaufbahn befinden, davon 15 000 im erdnahen Orbit in einer Höhe von 200 bis 2000 Kilometern. Mit bis zu rund 28 000 Kilometern pro Stunde rast der Müll um die Erde, selbst nur zentimetergroße Teilchen können durch ihre enorme Geschwindigkeit aktive Satelliten beschädigen oder sogar völlig zerstören. Die internationale Raumstation ISS muss jährlich vier bis fünf Ausweichmanöver starten.
Translation - English Heavy traffic is the rule in our neighboring outer space. In addition to the numerous satellites orbiting Earth, space debris, such as burned out launcher stages and fragments of destroyed space vehicles have transformed Earth’s lower orbit into a junkyard.
It is estimated that about 15,000 objects longer than 3 inches are currently in orbits lower than 1,250 miles of altitude. Moving at speeds of up to 17,000 mph, even minute fragments can damage or completely destroy active satellites. The International Space Station executes an average of four to five evasive maneuvers yearly.
The European Space Agency has comissioned Spanish and German engineers with the development of a radar-based "Space Situational Awareness" program whereby complete coverage of even the smallest orbiting fragments can be achieved.

Source text - German Das Team um Gill Bejerano untersuchte 510 Genabschnitte, die beim Menschen heute nicht mehr vorkommen, aber im Erbgut von Schimpansen und anderen Tieren erhalten sind.
Meistens handelt es sich dabei um nicht kodierende DNA, also um Sequenzen, die keine Informationen zur Herstellung von Eiweißen enthalten. Dennoch können diese Schnipsel wichtige Funktionen besitzen: Durch sie kann etwa geregelt werden, ob ein benachbartes Gen abgelesen wird und damit aktiviert ist oder nicht.
Translation - English The team led by Gill Bejerano analyzed 510 genomic sequences that no longer occur in humans but can be found in other animals, such as chimpanzees.
Most of these fragments are non-coding sequences; that is, they do not contain information to produce proteins as normal genes do. Nevertheless, these sequences may fulfill important regulatory functions, such as controlling whether a neighboring gene becomes activated or not.

I did my Ph.D. dissertation in Austria an then went on to Johns Hopkins University and the Baylor College of Medicine, publishing in a number of international biomedical journals. I have worked as a Medical Information Specialist and I'm currently active as medical writer.
