Poetry with a tune: "Translation of Lyrics"»  Source text notes: English

Source text notes should be used to make comments only about the meaning of the source text, or its style, sense, etc. Source texts notes should not be used to discuss translation of the text.

A good source text note is one that clarifies something about the source text, and therefore would be helpful to a person translating that text into any language. The purpose of these notes will be to help those evaluating translations (in any pair) to make well-informed judgments.

Examples:

We're lost, but we're making good time.In US English, 'making good time' means 'making good progress' (not 'having fun').
If the world were perfect, it wouldn't be.Grammatically, a contradiction. This adds to the impact of the remark.
I'm not going to buy my kids an encyclopedia. Let them walk to school like I did.'encyclopedia' sounds like something you could ride to school on. (That's the only reason this quote is notable.)

Source text notes should be entered only in the language of the source text.

It is possible to agree and disagree with source text notes. Do that unless you have something new to add.

Could someone change the phrase "contest only open to members" to "contest only open to paid members" as free account holders are alsoe deemed as "members" according to the rhetoric of the site. very misleading.

I like Kris Kristofferson's version the best. It seems to be more in tune with the general mood of the lyrics. Besides, let us not forget that it was Kris Kristofferson who wrote them. :)

I like the first sentence of the forth paragraph "i've smoked my mind with cigarettes" because it is implicit and comic.

Melody is so important in poetry, that I want to stress once more that the author of the newly written text must be given the opportunity to read and record it. Otherwise you're stripped of the most important tool: to give the sound/melody of the text.

Keep in mind this is a song, therefore the translation should be as succinct as possible. Attempting to capture every word could result in wordiness, which could be interpreted as mistranslation, when in reality it is an adaptation. Rhyme is not critical.

#2 Well, I woke up Sunday morning With no way to hold my head that didn't hurt. And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad, So I had one more for dessert. (10)

#3 Then I fumbled in my closet through my clothes And found my cleanest dirty shirt. Then I washed my face and combed my hair And stumbled down the stairs to meet the day. (6)

#4 I'd smoked my mind the night before With cigarettes and songs I'd been picking. But I lit my first and watched a small kid Playing with a can that he was kicking. (8)

#5 Then I walked across the street And caught the Sunday smell of someone's frying chicken. And Lord, it took me back to something that I'd lost Somewhere, somehow along the way. (7)

#6 On a Sunday morning sidewalk, I'm wishing, Lord, that I was stoned. 'Cause there's something in a Sunday That makes a body feel alone. (7)
